Selecting studies

After the literature search is run, the next step is to carefully screen the results to identify those studies that will be included in the review. This presentation gives guidance on selecting included studies using pre-specified eligibility criteria. The presentation also introduces the PRISMA Statement and accompanying flowchart, which sets out good practice for reporting results of a search for a systematic review.

The presentation has been translated into several languages other than English. Select an available language from the list at the top right of this page.

A sample checklist of eligibility criteria for a hypothetical review is available to download.

After using this resource, you should be able to...
  • Describe the process for minimising bias in making judgments about including studies according to a review question
  • Analyse search results using pre-specified eligibility criteria
  • Prepare a PRISMA flowchart to present results of a search
