Rapid evidence reviews have emerged as a key form of evidence synthesis in the COVID-19 response, but they have limitations. McMaster University are organising a series of 90-minute sessions for healthcare consumers (patients, carers and the public) to learn how to recognise good health evidence. These hands-on, informal sessions will cover:
- Why rapid reviews are a valuable tool
- How rapid reviews are conducted
- What to look for to judge if you can trust the result
- How to provide feedback to reviewers
These free sessions will take a small group discussion-based approach to understanding rapid reviews, and the strengths and limitations of their findings. Participants will be expected to read the session’s article in advance and be open to engaging in a discussion on the topic.

Online Journal Club basics
The goal is to have very interactive 90-minute sessions, so the group will be fairly small, and everyone is encouraged to participate. Remember, you do not need to be correct – we are all here to learn! But you are asked to be willing to share your opinions and judgements with other participants.
Preparation for Session:
- Read the featured article which will be shared with you before the session.
- Read through the critical appraisal tool: CASP Tool for Systematic Review
Information will be sent to you in good time for your session. If you have any questions please email consumers@cochrane.org
